Jane Schlenvogt-Dew

Jane’s hometown is Stephenson, Michigan, which makes her a born and bred Yooper, that is, from the Upper Peninsula! After earning her bachelor’s degree from Dr Martin Luther College, New Ulm, Minnesota, in 1982, her first teaching stint was in Bradenton, Florida, where she spent fifteen years sharing Jesus with families she met through Peace Lutheran Church and School. During that time, she taught up to four grades, taught departmentalized school music, led choirs, accompanied worship on the organ, and directed and produced school musicals. Her passion for the Word led to hosting Bible Studies for women in her home.

A ministry Call took her to Eastside Lutheran in Madison, where she taught third grade and served as church Music Coordinator. Women gathered to study the Word of God at her home and at a WELS area women’s breakfast.

When St Andrew Lutheran in Middleton opened their school in 2001, Jane accepted the position to teach 1st and 2nd grades at Westside Christian. She also served on the Women’s Ministries Team at St Andrew for ten years as well as the WELS Women’s ministries team for six years.

In 2011, she met Mathew Dew, and married him three months later! God, in his wisdom, took Mat to heaven in 2013 through esophageal cancer. The blessings continue through Mat’s two sons, daughter-in-law, and grandson, Graham Mathew.

Since retiring from teaching in 2012, Jane completed her Master of Arts in Religion from Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, continues to lead Bible studies, serve on her congregation’s Visitation Team, substitute teach, dabble in writing and host frequent guests at her home on Madison’s south side, lovingly called “The Dew Drop Inn.” Hobbies include time in the kitchen, (Can you say Dutch Baby?), reading and biking- especially at the family cottage. I can be reached at jdew324@gmail.com.

Presentations

Keynote: “Jesus Crowns Ordinary Lives.” Jane Schlenvogt-Dew

God called Esther out of her familiar neighborhood into a Persian paradise. There, she lived out his plan for her life- right to the royal throne- influencing others along the way. Hear how God used the life of an ordinary woman, an ex-patriot in a foreign land- and on this earth- to grow his Kingdom in Christ.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 1 Peter 2:9

Breakout Session 1

A: “The Power Behind the Throne” Jane Schlenvogt-Dew
In serving Jesus, our Savior, crowns can become scuffed and our view of Paradise clouded by troubles. Many of us have, in God's strength, stepped forward with Jesus as he straightened our crowns to live for him. Perhaps you have your own rags-to-riches story of faith! This sectional will facilitate the sharing of those stories in small group discussions.

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. James 1:12

B: “Shine Brightly” Debbie Dietrich
You are royal! You are chosen! You are loved! But, let’s be real. Some days, sometimes several times every day, we have trouble standing up straight and shining boldly wearing the beautiful crown of righteousness with which God has adorned us. Life can get a bit cloudy, maybe even dark and scary! Come, be encouraged and inspired by our Lord’s Words to shine bold and beautiful. Find out why that’s important and come away with specific and unique tools God’s given us to keep shining brightly in a sometimes dark and scary world.

I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles. Isaiah 42:6

Breakout Session 2

A: “The Royal Treatment” Jane Schlenvogt-Dew
Jesus went to where the people were and talked with sinners, befriended them, dined with them, listened to them- and loved them. What could that look like in your world? How will you be Jesus to those God has placed in your world? Barista to bellhop, medic to manager, strangers or siblings- this workshop will help you see those in need of Christ's love- and yours!

When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee's house and reclined at the table. Luke 7:36

B: “The Humble, Dignified Princess” Debbie Dietrich
You are captivating, beautiful, highly privileged, a royal priesthood, specifically chosen, dearly loved by God. WOW! Those are some heady, bold and royal statements about you! Is that in contradiction to Peter 5:5 where we are to clothe ourselves in humility, Proverbs 16:18 where pride goes before destruction , Philippians 2 where in humility we are to count others more significant than ourselves or James 4 where God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble?

How do we make an effective difference in this already confusing world, living out our royal priesthood proudly yet clothed in humility? Join me in an interactive study and walk away with humble confidence!

Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrews 4:16

August Book Club Novel

Our next summer book club novel is The Fine Art of Insincerity, and will be held in the church basement or a park, weather permitting, on August 20th at 7:00 p.m. I'm really looking forward to reading this novel. It sounds like an easy read and a great way to launch a good discussion.
Experience one grueling weekend in the lives of three sisters... Marital frustrations collide with poignant memories when the sisters gather to close up Grandma's treasured beach house for the last time. While not specifically a Christian novel, the story provides many topics for discussion.

July Book Club Novel

Our next book club meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 16, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at Val Klika's home. Appetizers and selected beverages will be supplied. You are welcome to bring your own beverage.

Our new novel will be A Skeleton In God's Closet by Paul L. Maier. (The evidence seems incontestable: bones unearthed in an Israeli tomb are those of Jesus of Nazareth. But which is the hoax...the archeological find or the Resurrection itself? Carefully researched and compellingly written, the story explores the tension between faith and doubt when science and religion collide.)

The book an be purchased at Barnes and Noble, Amazon.com, and Alibris.com.

Walking for Fun and Exercise

Ladies of all ages are welcome to join us as we walk at Village Park in Menomonee Falls at 10 am on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays this June.  We will meet near the play structure and picnic tables next to the parking lot on Garfield Dr.  The path is paved so you can bring a stroller if you have small children.  We will walk 4 times around a loop that takes about 12 minutes.  Since we loop back to the starting point several times, you can arrive late or leave early.

On Thursdays you are welcome to stay for a prayer gathering afterward (about 10:45) at the picnic tables.

If you have any questions, post them below or contact Carla Wolff.

Pilgrim Book Club's First Novel

Our first book club novel will be The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom. I have read this book twice already and look forward to sharing and discussing this incredible true story about Corrie Ten Boom and her Dutch family. The Hiding Place tells the riveting story of how a middle-aged Dutch watchmaker became a heroine of the Resistance, a survivor of Hitler's death camps, and one of the most remarkable evangelists of the twentieth century.
The first meeting will take place at Val Klika's home from 7:00 to 8:30 on Wednesday, June 18. Snacks and select beverages provided. You are welcome to also bring your own beverage. Book Club members are responsible for purchasing their own novels. This book can be purchased at Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com, and Alibris.com.
